Our Fire Fighters Book

We made a book about the Fire Fighters visit to our school this week. We wrote our sentences and illustrated our work.

Here is our voicethread - we tried to read smoothly and with expression.

Proud Preps!

Today the Preps were very proud to present our two nesting boxes and a donation to Adriana from Human Seeds. Adriana was so grateful for all the hard work and effort the Preps showed to complete their action to help our local wild life.

Once again we thank Kylie and Bunnings in Box Hill for generously donating the materials for the nesting boxes, allowing us to present Adriana with all the money we raised on Rainbow Day. This money will be used to support Adriana's volunteer work.

Adriana accepts our donation from two proud Preps.
The nesting boxes will be great homes for sick or injured possums.
Our nesting boxes.
A very proud day!

Our Action - Helping our wildlife!

After a term of many exciting experiences and learning we have completed our action to support those volunteers who look after our injured wildlife.

Yesterday, with the help of Kylie from Bunnings Box Hill, we finished two nesting boxes. We will present these to Adriana who works with Wild Life Victoria, along with the money we raised from our Rainbow Day fundraiser. Due to the generosity of Bunnings Box Hill (who donated all the materials for our nesting boxes) we are able to present Adriana with a cheque for $298.00 to support her volunteer work. See Our Action here.

We are VERY proud of our efforts.

Here we are putting our nesting boxes together with a lot of help from Kylie.

A visit from the Fire Fighters!

This week we were very lucky to have two visits from the Fire fighters. They taught us all about how to be safe in case of a fire.

The firefighters spoke to us about having smoke alarms in our houses and what to do if there is fire in the house you need to -  CRAWL DOWN LOW AND GO, GO, GO!

If your clothes catch fire you must –
STOP, DROP, COVER (your face) and ROLL.

In an emergency call 000

Preps - talk to your parents about all you learnt today. Talk about your safe meeting place and prepare your family fire escape plan.

Thank you to the The Metropolitan Fire and Emergency Services Board (MFB) Box Hill and their firefighters who do such wonderful work educating our students!

Bubbles, bubbles, beautiful bubbles!

Today we blew bubbles! We are learning about the letter b this week. We went out onto the hill and blew bubbles - the sun was shining and we could see tiny rainbows in each bubble. Blowing bubbles was great fun - it made us feel happy!

Fantastic Fish!

In Art we made Fantastic Fish using collage. We drew our ocean backgrounds and painted food dye over the seaweed.

The Preps are proud of themselves because they worked hard and think their fish look fantastic, fabulous and fun!

What do you think of our fabulous fish?

Rainbow Day!

Today we had the first part of our action - Rainbow Day. The whole school wore their favourite colours and brought a gold coin donation.

The Preps are so proud of our school community who were very generous with their donations and we raised $255.60!

Together Prep D and Prep K counted the gold coins - a quick way was to group the dollar coins in groups of 10 - to make $10.00 and the two dollar coins in groups of 5 to make $10.00. Then we counted  by tens to $255.60 (Maths in real life!)

Wow!
Now we move onto the next stage of our action. We need to buy the materials to make some nesting boxes, prepare the materials and put the nesting boxes together.

We hope our family and friends will be able to support us in this next stage!

Collaborating at St. Luke's.

Today we shared our Developmental Learning session with our friends in Prep D. We do many things together and today it was wonderful to see both Prep classes playing and sharing with each other. Here we are!

Our Action!

We have had so many wonderful learning experiences to help us answer our big question 'What do living things need to grow and change?' We were also thinking about how we can help animals in need. Adriana from Human Seeds and Wildlife Victoria came and spoke to us about how she cares for wildlife that have been hurt or injured.
We decided that we would like to to help Adriana, so we followed a Problem Based Learning model to work out what we could do. This slideshow takes you through the steps we followed to choose an action and prepare a timeline for each stage of the process. The process allows the students to have a voice and make decisions democratically. Here are the results so far:

We are very excited about helping our injured wildlife. We will post more about our action soon!

Good Bye Chicks!

We have loved having our chicks in our classroom. Tomorrow they will be leaving to live on a farm. Having our chickens has helped us learn SO much about how a chicken is born and about what living things need to grow and survive.

Here is our video of just some of the things we have discovered and why we have loved having the chicks in our room.

In Prep we have been practising our speaking skills. We have learnt that we need to speak clearly, use a voice that can be heard by everyone and make eye contact with our audience
We would love some feedback to let us know if you think we have done all of these things in our video!

What do you notice?

This chick is one week old. What do you notice about his wings?

The chickens are growing and changing before our very eyes!
