Merry Christmas!

Last Monday the Preps were very privileged to present the story of Jesus' birth at our assembly. They were amazing - so respectful and full of joy. We were very proud of them all!

Reuse! Reuse! Reuse!

This term we have been trying to reduce, reuse and recycle. We wanted to reuse an old glass jar to make something new and useful.

We decided to make a Christmas lantern as a gift to our families.

We are caring for the environment and reusing a glass jar to make something that is beautiful!

Here is how we did it:

Take one old glass jar.

Decorate it with tissue paper in Christmas colours.

Tie a ribbon around the rim.

Place a tealight candle inside.

Decorate with small shiny gems and you have ...... one beautiful Christmas lantern!

Our Promises to care for the Environment

This term we have been learning about how we can care for the environment. To finish our unit we have thought about a personal action we can take to help reduce waste going to landfill, to reuse items and to recycle all the materials we can.

Our hope is that our families, friends and school community will support us and work with us to carry out our promises.

This term we have learnt that small actions can make a BIG difference to our environment.

Hint - you can press pause on the slideshow to read each promise.

Collaborating in Maths - Subtraction

Last Friday the Preps were very lucky to have a Maths session with the Junior students. They wanted to teach us about Subtraction. Each Junior student had made a poster showing their understanding of what subtraction is. Mrs Klein and Tom showed us a new game on the IWB using a number line. You could use addition or subtraction to play the game.

Then we broke up into small groups with Preps, Grade Ones and Grade Twos to play lots of subtraction games.

It was wonderful to see the Preps learning with the Juniors and to see how supportive the Juniors were. The Preps were so excited to learn new games and practise their skills in Maths. Well done everyone and a big thank you to Mrs Klein for a great idea and for all your organisation.

Fire Education

Today we had a second visit from the Firefighters. We were allowed to sit in the fire truck and hold onto the fire hose and spray water. We have learnt many important messages about fire safety.

We learnt:

If you hear the smoke alarm

Crawl down low

If your clothes catch fire

In an emergency call 000

Talk to your family about a safe meeting place in case of an emergency - the Firefighters suggested your letterbox is a good place to meet.

Our Wonderful World!

As part of our inquiry this term we have made a video with messages about how all of us can care for the environment

We worked together in groups to think of our message, worked out the words we would say and collected the props we needed.

Here is our video!

Reuse and create Art!

We are working very hard to look after the environment and reduce the amount of rubbish going into landfill. Over the term the Preps have collected small items that would normally be thrown away - buttons, bottle tops, bits of ribbon, material pieces, coloured paper, beads and so much more!
We are going to create a colourful rainbow with all our reusable items and give a gift to the environment - reducing rubbish in landfill.

Thank you to all our families who sent along bits and pieces for our creation.

Stayed tuned for the finished piece!

Creativity in Maths - 3D Shapes!

In Maths we have been exploring 3D shapes. We used lots of materials and 3D shapes to build houses. We worked with a partner to plan the design of our houses and share our ideas. Some of the features we added to our creations were: a fountain, a swimming pool, a balcony, a double story house, a garage with a car, a staircase, outdoor furniture and one group even built a palace and a disco! and another group built a mansion with a waterfall - all using 3D shapes. Very, very creative!

When we had finished we shared our houses and talked about the shapes we had used.

What 3D shapes do you know?

God's Creation

In Religion we have been thinking about our wonderful world and how grateful we are. We also realise that God asks us all to look after and care for the world He has given us.

When we were thinking about our thank you prayers, we were trying very hard to think of interesting words to describe our paintings and the special parts of God's creation.

Tell us what you are thankful for!

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

The Preps had a fabulous excursion to The Gould League in Moorabbin (thanks Mrs Coffa!) to learn about how we can reduce the amount of rubbish going into landfill by reusing and recycling.

The Gould League was an amazing place - it even had its very own shrinking machine allowing the Preps to explore the inside of a compost bin. So many hands on activities - the Preps were totally engaged all day.

A big thank you to Mrs. Reszka, Mrs. David, Sonya, Suzi and Emma for helping to make this day fantastic and for taking such great photos to share.

Also thank you to Kirsten from the Gould League who ran the day and was amazing!

We learnt:

- if you drop rubbish on the road it will go down the holes on the side of the road and into the ocean. Gracie

- if you put your recycling in a bag they (the Recycling team) can't open the bag. Alexa

- you need to put the rubbish in the right bin. Joshua

- if you put the wrong rubbish in the wrong bin they can't recycle anything. Chantelle

- that rubbish need to go in the right bin because it will hurt the environment. Stephanie

- that butchie boys come in all different sizes. Niamh

- that worms can be so helpful because they help the environment. Campbell

- that bottles go in the blue bin and plastic bags go in the red bin. James

- that you can't put oranges and lemons in the worm farm. Eva

- that you can put newspaper into the worm farm. Caitlin

- that orange peels don't go in the worm farm. Hamish

- that oranges go in the rubbish bin. Patrick

- that you have to put the right rubbish in the right bin. Elva

- that you put the right rubbish in the right bin. Sophie

- when you put rubbish in a bag and tie it up the truck comes and takes it to the MRF and the people at the MRF are not allowed to open it. Simon

- about the sad compost bin. Declan

- we can't recycle diapers. Joel

- if you put the wrong rubbish into the wrong bin it can't be recycled. Riley

- if you put your rubbish in a plastic bag they can't open the bag. Rosie

Days of the Week!

We have been learning about the days of the week. Not only do we need to learn to read the days of the week and put them in the correct order, we also need to think about what happens on each day.

We have been talking about activities that we do on specific days and we have been practising time words - if today is Wednesday then yesterday was Tuesday and tomorrow will be Thursday.

Here we are singing our 'Days of the Week' song - some Mums and Dads might recognise the tune!

Community Spirit at St. Luke's - Helping Others.

Today we had a mini market at school to raise money for children in the Philippines.

Our student Social Justice group organised and supervised stalls. Everyone came along today with their pocket money ready to join in the fun and help raise money for those less fortunate than us.

Parents and friends were invited and community spirit was well and truly alive!

The Preps were in charge of the Sweets and Lollies stall. Due to the generosity and kindness of our Prep families and families in the school we were able to raise $200.00!! - just from the lolly stall. Stay tuned for our overall amount.

Declan's mum, Sonya and Niamh's mum, Madeline did a fantastic job bagging up all the lollies! Thank you so much!

Thank you to those parents who sent along lollies already bagged and to those who did some home baking. A fantastic effort by everyone.

Mrs Gridley prepared a PowerPoint to show where our fundraising money would go and how it will be used.

What Am I?

We have been writing What Am I?'s in Literacy. With our partner we thought of an animal and wrote the clues. We learnt that it is important not to make the first clue too easy! After we had written our What Am I?'s we practised reading clearly and fluently and recorded our clues on audioboo. Can you guess the animals?

Today we have:

Stephanie (Frances and Stephanie wrote theirs together but missed recording together)
Sophie and Rosie
Alexa and Riley

Do you have a 'What Am I?' to share with us?
