Community Helpers!

In our community we have:

POLICE
Jack's dad came to school to tell us about being a Policeman.

This is what we learnt:
I learnt that Police can ride horses. Andy
I learnt that the Police ride in helicopters. Eva
I didn't know that Police have handcuffs. Matthew
I didn't know that you are not allowed to talk on your phone when you are driving. Kirra
Steve told us that we have to wear our helmets when we are riding our bikes. Caoimhe
When you ring 000 you will find the Police but you only ring if there is an emergency. Aerodyne
I learnt that the Police go to the footy to make sure people stay safe. Georgia

DOCTORS
Noah's dad came to school to tell us about being a doctor.

We discovered:
Doctors help people who are sick or hurt. Molly
They give people check ups to make sure they are healthy. Will H
A doctor takes a blood test, listens to your heart and takes your temperature. Jake
Noah's Dad hit Noah's knee and his leg went straight up (reflex). Will P
Doctors need x-rays to see if your bones are healthy. Vivienne

Are you a Community helper?
Do you know any other Community Helpers that you could share with us?

  1. What a great experience Preps! Community helpers are very important. In New Zealand, in many small towns there are firefighters who volunteer and put out fires for free. There are also many lifesavers in New Zealand that work on the beaches during summer. They are very important community helpers.

  2. Hello, my name is Jane and I am a Paramedic. When people are very sick they ring 000 for an ambulance to come and help them wherever they may be. Paramedics assess how sick someone is, we can give them medication and take them into hospital. Some people we see have had accidents or they may have an illness that makes them feel sick, or sometimes they just want to talk to someone about things that are worrying them. Paramedics are here to help everyone in the community.

  3. What a wonderful experience!

Community helpers certainly make a difference. :)

A visit from a police officer and a doctor has shown you two important community helpers.

Others might include people such as nurses, fire fighters, ambulance drivers, charity workers, teachers (yes, they help the community too.), volunteers and many others.

I can see you all learnt new things about your visitors. Well done!

  4. Community Helpers are wonderful people. I have many friends who are nurses, fire fighters, doctors and of course teachers. They all help to care for us, keep us safe, help us to learn and grow.
Will you be a community helper when you grow up?

  5. Wow, you are lucky Prep K to have two important community helpers that are parents from your class.
we bet you learnt a lot from their visits - isn't it great how we can bring authentic learning into the classroom.

Does Jack's dad drive a police car? Does he wear a police hat? Is your emergency number 111 like ours? Do some of the Australian police officers ride motorbikes?
